History

The investment and finance operations of the Sabvest Group derive from the industrial holding, trade finance and investment businesses of the S A Bias Group which was originally listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in 1948.

The chronology is as follows:

1948 - S A Bias Binding manufacturers Limited was listed on the JSE;
   
1959 - Clappers Shipping (PTY) Limited (subsequently renamed Merchant Trade Finance Limited) was formed to fund clothing industry customers;
   
1980 - Trade finance operations were expanded pursuant to Christopher Seabrooke joining the group;
   
1984 - Brockhouse S A Limited was acquired, the name of which was changed to Merhold Limited, and which subsequently owned the trade finance, export trading and investment businesses of the group;
   
1987 - Merhold ordinary shares were listed on the JSE;
   
1988 - S A Bias Industries ordinary shares were listed on the JSE;
   
1988 - Pyramid company, Sabvest Limited, was established which controlled Sabhold Group Limited (formerly S A Bias Binding Manufacturers Limited) and which in turn owned controlling interests in Merhold and S A Bias, i.e. the group comprised four listed companies;
   
1988 - S A Bias Industries ordinary shares were listed on the JSE;
   
1995 - The group's banking and trade finance holdings were sold;
   
1996 - Merhold and Sabhold Group were delisted;
   
1997 - S A Bias was delisted and 50% sold to management;
   
1997 - Sabvest continued as a JSE listed group holding large minority or joint controlling interests in a spread of listed and unlisted companies, usually in partnership with the management of those companies.
